Creating a world of belonging through life-changing youth mentoring!

A
s we work toward more cohesive, resilient communities in New Zealand, it’s vital we provide timely support to the emerging generation.

Upside is one of New Zealand’s leading youth mentoring organisations, transforming lives through our evidence-based model since 2006. So far, we have empowered over 1,200 vulnerable tamariki and rangatahi, giving them a chance at a brighter future.

How does it work? We train and support volunteer mentors to walk alongside at-risk young people, aged 9-13, that have faced daunting challenges. For two hours a week, for at least a year, the mentor ‘holds space’ for their young person – listening, laughing, caring and creating magic moments while baking cakes, walking on the beach or kicking a ball. The effects are profound.

Collectively, our mentors give 7,000 volunteer hours a year in Auckland, and through partner organisations we extend our reach to other communities across Aotearoa.

What’s the impact?

Independent analysis of our programme shows significant outcomes for young people, including:

  • Improved mental and physical health
  • Higher educational attainment
  • Reduced risk of family violence and addiction
  • Reduced risk of criminal activity

In fact, every dollar invested in Upside generates $4.70 of social value for Aotearoa. (ImpactLab, 2020)

“The impact cannot be underestimated. We’re seeing a shift in academics, school attendance, social interactions and within homes.” – School
