Making a Difference through Mentorship: Inside Upside Youth Mentoring with Donald Fawkner

News   |   August 6th, 2024

TALKING UP

Mentoring can be a powerful force for change in a young person's life.  Life FM recently invited Donald Fawkner, the programme manager at Upside, to share insights into our mission and the transformative effect mentorship can have on young people.

The Heart of Upside Youth Mentoring

Upside Youth Mentoring focuses on 9 to 13-year-olds who are not necessarily at high risk but could benefit significantly from having a mentor in their lives. They liaise with partner schools to identify these kids and pair them with committed mentors who meet with them weekly for an entire year. These mentors do not aim to 'fix' the young people but instead accompany them on simple yet meaningful activities such as walking the dog or enjoying ice cream together, enabling them to be a consistent and supportive presence in the children's lives.

Donald Fawkner's Journey to Upside

During a conversation with a friend about the prevalent youth crime and ram raids in the media, Donald was challenged with the question: “What are you going to do about it?” Though initially stumped, this question lingered in his mind. His prior engagement as a families ministry leader at a church had laid the groundwork for his future role at Upside. When an incident highlighted the lack of support for at-risk youth, Donald knew he had to step up. The impact and potential of Upside resonated with him, prompting his decision to join the organisation.

The Tangible Impact of Mentorship

In this interview, Donald shared success stories from the program are a testament to its effectiveness. In one instance, a child mentored through Upside showed noticeable improvements within three weeks of being paired with a mentor, developing both socially and academically. Another young boy, facing abandonment and loss at an early age, found hope and consistency through his mentor's commitment. In each case, the presence of a mentor helps lift some of the burdens these young people carry, offering them a chance to thrive.

Who Can Be a Mentor?

When it comes to potential mentors, Upside is inclusive and diverse. From business professionals, to retirees and also students, anyone willing to make a positive impact in a child’s life is welcome to apply. The application process is rigorous, ensuring the safety and suitability of mentors for these important roles. Upside is devoted to making sure the fit is right for both the mentor and the young person, fostering lasting and meaningful relationships.

The Ripple Effect of Mentorship

Donald shares how mentorship not just benefits the mentee, but often their entire families and communities. Positive changes in the young person can inspire their parents and guardians, leading to constructive shifts within the household and beyond. These ripple effects substantiate mentorship as a powerful social tool with far-reaching benefits.
